Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT)

Overview

Hormone replacement therapy is used to relieve symptoms of the menopause by replacing hormones that are at a lower level at the onset of menopause.

HRT also helps to prevent weakening of the bones (osteoporosis), which is more common after the menopause.

Causes

Women usually decide to have hormone replacement therapy when they know they are due to start their menopause. Balancing the hormones to an optimum level, can help patients experience an easier menopause.

HRT patients experience less mood swings and temperaments they would not class as normal.

Risks

Women who have premature menopause are at a higher risk for osteoporosis due to the premature decrease in the hormone estrogen. The lack of this hormone oestrogen can also increase risk factors for ovarian and colon cancers, cataracts, and gum disease.  HRT increase the oesrtogen levels and can minimise these risks. However, as with any medication, HRT can cause some adverse effects. These commonly include breast tenderness, headaches, nausea, indigestion, stomach pain and vaginal bleeding.  Using HRT for long periods could increase the risk of developing blood clots and breast cancer in very rare cases.

Treatments

HRT can take many forms depending on individual circumstances. MyMedsUK can offer Evorel and Evorel Conti patches and Livial tablets to customers who have been using similar HRT . Please answer the questionnaire as completelt as possible in order for the online GP to make an informed decision to prescribe for you.
